Tidio Review (2026):
When the Free Plan is Enough
(and When It Isn't)

Most Tidio reviews online are either thinly-disguised Tidio adverts ("4.7 stars, 300,000 happy customers!") or competitor takedowns trying to sell you something else. This isn't either. It's a clear answer to a specific question: does your Shopify store actually need to upgrade to a paid Tidio plan, or can you stay on free for another six months? Three numbers decide it. Most of this page is about those three numbers — plus the hidden costs that turn the advertised $29/month into a $150/month bill.

// the short answer

Tidio's free plan is genuinely useful for stores under 50 monthly conversations. The Starter plan ($24.17/month annual) is the sweet spot for stores doing 50-100 monthly conversations who need branded chat and basic flows. Above 200 conversations/month or with a team of 4+, ticket-based platforms like Gorgias usually win on unit economics. The maths is below — including the Lyro AI add-on that doubles your bill.

The three numbers that decide it

Tidio is conversation-based, not seat-based. Whether free, Starter, or Growth is right depends almost entirely on these three figures. Calculate them honestly before you upgrade.

// NUMBER 1
50 / 100 / 250
Monthly billable conversations. Free covers 50. Starter covers 100. Growth starts at 250 and scales. Above 250 you're paying for a tier you may grow out of fast — model 6-month volume before committing.
// NUMBER 2
$50k
Monthly GMV. Below $50k, the $24-49 plan price is meaningful relative to margin. Above $50k, your support volume usually outgrows Tidio's tier structure within 3-6 months and ticket-based platforms compete.
// NUMBER 3
10 max
Agent seats. Every self-service plan caps at 10 agents — the 11th seat requires the $749/month Plus tier. If your team is approaching 10 agents, plan the upgrade or switch path now, not after you hit the wall.

The honest "stay on free" cases

Tidio's free plan is genuinely usable. If any of these describe your store, don't upgrade yet:

  • Under 50 conversations/month. The free plan covers it. Upgrading buys capacity you don't use. Re-evaluate when you consistently hit 40+ conversations for two months running.
  • Solo or 2-person team. All plan tiers (including free) include 10 seats — paying for Starter or Growth doesn't give you more agents, only more conversations and features.
  • Just testing live chat. Free + the 50 one-time Lyro AI conversations gives you a real evaluation of whether AI chat resolves enough queries to justify paying for it. Most stores find Lyro handles 60-85% of routine inquiries — but verify on your traffic before paying the $32.50+/month add-on.
  • Branding doesn't matter yet. "Powered by Tidio" appears on free and Starter plans. Stores in early validation usually don't care. Stores selling premium products care a lot — and that's a $20/month add-on or a Plus upgrade away.

The honest "upgrade to Starter" cases

Starter ($24.17/month annual, $29/month monthly) makes sense when:

  • 50-100 conversations/month consistently. Free won't cover it. Starter will. Don't jump straight to Growth — most stores at this volume don't need its analytics or permissions.
  • You need basic analytics. Free has no visit tracking. Starter adds a live visitors list, basic analytics, and operating hours — useful for understanding when your support actually needs to be staffed.
  • Email + chat unification matters. Starter adds proper email management. If you're juggling Gmail and live chat in separate places, Starter resolves that.

The "stop and consider Gorgias instead" cases

If any of these describe your store, Tidio paid plans are probably the wrong long-term choice:

  • 200+ conversations/month and growing. Tidio's Growth plan starts at $49.17 for 250 conversations but tier-jumps fast — by 1,000/month you're often at $180+/month before AI. Gorgias's Pro plan ($300/month, 2,000 tickets included) frequently has better unit economics at this volume.
  • Multi-channel: chat + email + Instagram + Facebook + SMS. Tidio handles chat well but social DMs and SMS aren't its strength. Gorgias was built for unified multi-channel ecommerce support.
  • Approaching 10 agents. The 11th seat triggers a $749/month Plus plan jump. Per-agent platforms like Reamaze or per-ticket platforms like Gorgias scale more predictably.
  • Order-modifying support is core. If your agents regularly issue refunds, edit orders, or apply discount codes, Gorgias's native Shopify integration saves real time vs Tidio's tab-switching.
// THE GROWTH PATH

The realistic Tidio progression for a Shopify store: Free for first 6-12 months → Starter when conversations consistently exceed 50/month → Growth only if you genuinely need its analytics and the 250+ conversation tier matches your volume → migrate to Gorgias when you hit any of (200+ tickets/month, 4+ agents, multi-channel needs). Skipping straight from free to Growth is the most common overspend; the Starter plan is right for most stores.

If your store fits the Tidio sweet spot, the free plan is the right starting point. No card required.

Pricing

Tidio pricing in 2026 — what each plan actually costs

Five tiers. Conversation-based. The advertised price is rarely what you pay — Lyro AI and Flows are separately billed and most stores end up at 2-3x the headline cost.

Plan Monthly (annual) Conversations Seats Lyro AI bundle
Free // recommended start$050/mo1050 (one-time)
Starter$24.17 ($29/mo if monthly)100/mo1050 (one-time)
Growth$49.17 ($59/mo if monthly)250+ (scales)10Add-on only
Plus$749CustomCustomCustom
Premium$2,999+UnlimitedCustomCustom

All prices USD. Annual billing prices shown with monthly equivalent. Lyro AI starts at $32.50/month (50 conversations) and scales to ~$289/month. Flows automation starts at $24.17/month (2,000 reached visitors). Conversation overages trigger automatic tier upgrades at 95% usage unless disabled.

The hidden costs nobody mentions

The plan price is the floor, not the typical bill. Stores running Tidio paid usually pay 2-3x the advertised price. Where the extra goes:

1. Lyro AI is a separate bill — and it scales fast. The advertised $24-59/month plans don't include AI. Lyro starts at $32.50-$39 per month for 50 AI conversations and scales by volume up to ~$289/month. Lyro can also run independently of a paid plan at approximately $0.58 per conversation. A typical mid-sized Shopify store using AI ends up with $100+/month just on Lyro before adding the base plan.

2. Flows are also separately billed. Tidio's chatbot Flows builder is a separate add-on at $24.17-$29/month for 2,000 reached visitors per month. Pricing is per visitor *reached* by the flow — even if they don't engage. High-traffic stores with prominent flow placement can blow through this allowance fast.

3. Branding removal is paid. "Powered by Tidio" appears on Free, Starter, and (without add-on) Growth plans. Removal costs $20/month on Growth, included on Plus and above. For a polished customer-facing brand this is a meaningful extra.

4. Auto-upgrade at 95% conversation usage. Unless you disable it, Tidio automatically upgrades your plan when you hit 95% of your conversation quota — and you pay the full higher tier for that month with no proration. If you hit your cap on day 1 of the billing cycle, you pay the full Growth or Plus rate that month. Set internal alerts at 60-70% and disable auto-upgrade if you want manual control.

5. The Plus tier cliff. Going from Growth ($49-349/month) to Plus ($749/month) is a brutal jump. The trigger is usually the 11th seat, but it can also be conversation volume above ~5,000/month or features locked behind Plus. There's no smooth scaling between Growth and Plus — it's a $400-700/month vertical cliff.

What you actually pay — three real-world examples

// EXAMPLE A — solo apparel founder, $15k/month GMV

35 conversations/month, just testing chat. Plan: Free ($0). Within free conversation limit, uses one-time Lyro AI trial. Real monthly cost: $0. Reassesses in 6 months when GMV passes $30k.

// EXAMPLE B — small jewellery brand, $35k/month GMV

85 conversations/month, 2-person team, branded chat needed. Plan: Starter ($24.17/month annual). Branding removal not yet priority. No paid Lyro yet. Real monthly cost: ~$24.

// EXAMPLE C — DTC supplements, $80k/month GMV

350 conversations/month, 4-person team, Lyro AI active for FAQ deflection, Flows for cart recovery, branding removed. Plan: Growth ($59/month monthly) + Lyro ($75/month for ~150 AI conversations) + Flows ($29/month) + branding removal ($20/month). Real monthly cost: ~$183. At this volume, Gorgias Basic ($60/month + ~$50 in overages) starts to compete on price with deeper Shopify integration.

The pattern: the advertised price covers maybe 40-50% of what the bill actually becomes. Lyro and Flows together can equal or exceed the base plan. Plan accordingly — and re-evaluate against Gorgias once you cross 200 conversations/month.

Trust note

The December 2024 pricing event — what happened

No honest Tidio review can skip this. It's the single biggest reason cited in negative G2 and Capterra reviews through 2026 and it materially affects the trust calculation for new buyers.

In December 2024, Tidio implemented a major pricing restructure that effectively doubled monthly bills for many existing customers. Documented cases on G2 and Capterra describe customers seeing their charges jump from approximately $32/month to $64/month, with reports of automatic credit card charges processing before customers had time to review or cancel.

The change was widely characterised as a "bait and switch" in user reviews — customers had committed to a pricing model that was changed unilaterally. Trustpilot and Reddit threads from late 2024 and early 2025 are full of churned-customer accounts. The trust impact persists into 2026 reviews.

What this means for new buyers in 2026:

  • Don't sign annual contracts immediately. Stay on monthly billing for 60-90 days minimum to validate the platform and watch for any pricing announcements. The annual discount (~17-20%) isn't worth the lock-in until you've confirmed Tidio fits your store.
  • Monitor announcement channels. Tidio's pricing page, in-product announcements, and your account email — check periodically. The 2024 event hit hardest among customers who weren't paying close attention.
  • Have a migration plan ready. Know which alternative you'd switch to if pricing changes again. Gorgias for larger stores. Reamaze for per-agent simplicity. Crisp or Chatra for solo founders.
  • Free plan users are unaffected. If you're on the free tier, this doesn't apply to you — you're not paying anything to be doubled.

None of this means Tidio is a bad product — Lyro AI genuinely works, the Shopify integration is clean, and the conversation-based pricing model is rational for the right size store. But the trust event is real and ongoing, and any honest review has to flag it.

Alternatives

Where Tidio wins, where it loses

Tidio is excellent for a specific Shopify store profile. These are the cases where alternatives win.

Tidio vs Gorgias — different stages, not different qualities

Tidio is built for small-to-medium Shopify stores managing chat and email. Gorgias is built for larger ecommerce stores managing multi-channel high-volume support. Stores grow into Gorgias from Tidio, not the other way around. The full comparison covers the trigger points.

Use Tidio when: <$50k/month GMV, <200 conversations/month, chat + email primary, 1-3 agents. Use Gorgias when: the opposite — see the Gorgias review.

Tidio vs Reamaze — per-agent vs per-conversation

Reamaze charges $29-59 per agent per month with strong Shopify integration. For solo founders or 2-agent teams handling moderate conversation volume, Reamaze can be cheaper than Tidio Growth + Lyro + Flows. As teams grow past 4-5 agents, per-agent pricing gets expensive faster than Tidio's conversation-based model.

Tidio vs Crisp — when you need a clean free plan

Crisp's free plan is strong for chat alone (unlimited conversations on the free tier, 2 agents) but lacks Tidio's Shopify-native integration. For solo founders who want chat-only without paying anything, Crisp is genuinely better than Tidio's free plan. Once you need ticketing, multi-channel, or AI, Tidio pulls ahead.

Tidio vs Chatra — solo founder simplicity

Chatra has a permanent free plan with 1 agent and a single chat widget. For a one-person Shopify store that just wants a chat widget, Chatra is simpler than Tidio. Tidio wins as soon as you need email integration, social channels, or any automation.

FAQ

Common questions before you commit

Is Tidio worth it for a Shopify store?

Tidio is worth it for Shopify stores under $50,000/month GMV with under 200 support conversations per month, operating primarily through live chat and email, with a 1-3 person team. Below 50 conversations/month the free plan handles the workload at zero cost. Above 200 conversations or with a team of 4+ agents, ticket-based platforms like Gorgias usually have better unit economics.

How much does Tidio cost in 2026?

Five tiers: Free ($0/month, 50 conversations, 10 seats, 50 one-time Lyro), Starter ($24.17/month annual or $29 monthly, 100 conversations), Growth ($49.17/month annual scaling to ~$349 by volume, 250+ conversations), Plus ($749/month, removes the 10-seat cap), Premium ($2,999+/month). Lyro AI is separately billed at $32.50-$39/month and scales by volume. Flows are separately billed at $24.17-$29/month per 2,000 reached visitors. Real bills typically 2-3x the advertised plan price.

Does Tidio have a free plan?

Yes — Tidio's free plan is genuinely useful, not a gated demo. 50 billable conversations/month, 10 agent seats, live chat, ticketing, and 50 one-time Lyro AI conversations as a lifetime trial. There is also a 7-day free trial of all premium features with no credit card. The free plan reverts after the trial ends. The 50-conversation cap is the main constraint.

What counts as a billable conversation in Tidio?

Any chat, ticket, email, or social thread where a human agent replies at least once. If a customer messages and no human responds, it's not billed. Lyro AI replies and Flows do not count as human replies. Each new chat session is a separate billable conversation, including returning customers. Quotas refresh every 30 days from your billing date and unused capacity does not roll over.

How does Lyro AI pricing work in Tidio?

Lyro AI is a separate add-on billed independently. Every account gets 50 one-time Lyro conversations as a lifetime trial. Beyond that, paid Lyro starts at $32.50-$39/month for 50 AI conversations and scales to ~$289/month for higher tiers. Lyro can run independently without a paid Tidio plan at approximately $0.58 per AI conversation. Lyro replies don't count toward the base plan's billable conversation limit.

Should I use Tidio or Gorgias for my Shopify store?

Use Tidio if your store is under $50,000/month GMV, you handle under 200 conversations per month, you have a 1-3 person team, and you operate primarily through chat and email. Use Gorgias if your store is doing $50,000+/month GMV, handling 200+ tickets across multiple channels, with a team of 3+ agents. Stores typically grow into Gorgias from Tidio, not the other way around. Full comparison here.

Why did Tidio double prices in December 2024?

In December 2024, Tidio implemented a major pricing change that effectively doubled bills for many existing customers (cases of $32 jumping to $64/month) without adequate advance notice. Reports describe automatic credit card charges before customers could react. This is the single biggest credibility issue with Tidio in 2026 reviews. Mitigation: stay on monthly billing for 60-90 days before considering annual, monitor announcements, and have a migration plan ready.

Can I remove the "Powered by Tidio" branding?

Branding removal is not included on Free or Starter plans. On Growth, removing "Powered by Tidio" costs approximately $20/month as an add-on. It's included by default on Plus and higher. For a polished customer-facing brand experience this is a non-trivial extra cost — budget for it on Growth or factor it into the upgrade decision to Plus.

How long does it take to set up Tidio for Shopify?

Basic setup takes 30-60 minutes — install the Shopify app, configure the chat widget, set operating hours, import starter macros. Adding Lyro AI takes 1-2 hours to upload your knowledge base. Setting up Flows takes 2-4 hours per flow. Most stores can be live with chat in under an hour and fully optimised inside a week. Full setup guide here.

What are the best Tidio alternatives for Shopify?

For larger stores (200+ conversations, 4+ agents): Gorgias with deeper Shopify integration. For per-seat pricing: Reamaze ($29-59/agent/month). For budget caps: Freshdesk's free tier and $15/agent paid plans. For solo founders wanting permanent free chat: Crisp or Chatra. The right choice depends on which Tidio limit is hurting you — conversation cap, AI cost, 10-seat ceiling, or trust concerns.
